Who,
What, When, Where and Why of YEAH
HISTORY - YEAH was
founded in 1988 by two families with the desire to
provide social and leadership opportunities for home
educated teens in grades 7th through 12th.
Initially the focus was solely for social interaction,
but as time progressed the need and desire for
academic opportunities became increasingly apparent at
the request of YEAH's members.
In 1995, YEAH collaborated with
a home school co-op to provide weekly academic
classes. In 1997, a partnership with
Northwestern College Academy of Science was
established to provide science lab experiences for
home educated high school students.
In 1999, The Academy was founded
to broaden these academic opportunities to include a
full range of tutorial classes one day per week.
This was expanded in 2000 to two days per week for
additional offerings and in 2007, a third day was
added to include 5th and 6th grade students into a
Monday Middle School program. At this time, all
academic offerings (including its science program) are
on-site at a Roseville church.
Over the years, YEAH has offered
opportunities with a variety of social activities, ski
days, home school proms, curriculum sales, college
fairs, PLAN testing and educational workshops for
teens and their parents. Membership has expanded from
a dozen families in 1988 to an average of 500
families/year in recent years.
NEW: beginning in fall 2009, is
a proposed opportunity to partner with a local college to offer PSEO college classes on-site at our
Roseville location, classes taught by YEAH Academy
tutors who will be hired as adjunct professors by the
college. This will allow our 11th and 12th grade
home educated students to continue on their academic
journey, earning college credits while still in high
school, aiding their families financially while
remaining in the safe developmental and spiritual
setting provided by YEAH Academy and its staff.
GOAL - With the
ever-changing landscape of home education over the
past four decades, YEAH's continuous goal is to come
along side of home school families as they make the
best educational choices for each of their
children. Our goal is to stay in touch with the
every growing needs of its membership as home
education has moved from a pioneering venture in the
1970's and 1980's to a large and ever-expanding
movement ready to face the challenges of youth and
families in the Twenty-first Century.
